
Fixing the “Blinding Light” Problem in Ceiling Heaters
Most bathroom infrared lamps use short-wave radiation. It’s great for that instant blast of warmth, but there’s a catch. Standard quartz heaters put out a white light so bright it’s practically blinding. If you’ve ever looked up at one, you know the feeling. It’s harsh on the eyes—and for babies with sensitive retinas, it’s actually a real safety concern. So, we had to figure out how to keep the heat but lose the glare. Taming the light We started by playing with the coatings on the quartz tube. By adding a tinted layer or a selective absorber, we can basically “filter” the light. Think of it like sunglasses for the heater. It blocks that piercing white light while letting the infrared heat slide right through. Now, there is a small trade-off here. You lose a tiny bit of raw heat compared to a clear tube, but in exchange, you get a soft, safe glow instead of a spotlight. It’s a fair deal. Building it for safety The way we tuck these into the ceiling matters too. We use high-temperature reflectors that push the heat down toward you but scatter the light. This means you aren’t staring directly at the glowing filament. Inside the tube, we use a specific halogen gas. It keeps the filament from wearing out too fast and keeps the color consistent. Getting it installed right When you’re wiring these into a ceiling, things get hot—fast. You have to make sure the housing is rated for the wattage. If it isn’t, you’re risking scorched ceiling materials, which is a nightmare nobody wants. A pro tip? Use a dimmable controller. It lets the user dial in the exact amount of heat they want. Plus, it saves the lamp. When you aren’t running it at 100% all the time, the filament lasts much longer. Just make sure the fixture has plenty of breathing room for ventilation so the electronics don’t cook themselves.
