
Why Your Bathroom Heater Shouldn’t Blind You
When we started designing recessed infrared heaters for bathrooms, we ran into a bit of a problem. We wanted that intense, cozy heat that hits you the second you step out of the shower, but we didn’t want it to feel like a landing strip for airplanes. If you’ve ever used a standard short-wave quartz lamp, you know exactly what I mean. That piercing white light is a lot to handle—especially if you’re bathing a baby or just trying to wake up in the morning. Nobody wants a glare that makes them squint or stresses out their eyes.
Fixing the “Blinding” Problem
So, we decided to tweak the light. Standard halogen lamps throw out a whole mess of light, including the stuff that makes you squint and even some UV. To stop that, we use special coatings and filtered quartz. Basically, we block out the harsh, high-frequency light and keep the infrared waves. Instead of a blinding white flash, you get a soft, warm glow. You still feel all that heat on your skin, but your eyes aren’t fighting a battle with a spotlight.
The Trade-off
Now, here’s the honest part: you can’t have everything. By blocking the visible light to protect your eyes, the lamp isn’t as “bright” as a regular lightbulb. But since this is a heater and not a reading lamp, that’s a trade we’re happy to make. To make sure you don’t lose any of the warmth, we just optimize the filament wattage. You get the heat; you lose the headache.
Getting It Installed Right
Since these go into the ceiling, we’ve put a lot of thought into the “boring” stuff. We use high-temp wiring and heavy-duty brackets so the unit doesn’t sag over time. But the biggest challenge is the steam. Bathrooms are humid. If a drop of water hits a scorching hot quartz tube, it can crack. That’s why we use reinforced glass and housings that keep the moisture out. One last tip: make sure your electrician gives these a dedicated circuit. When those lamps kick in, they pull a decent amount of power, and you don’t want your lights flickering every time you want to get warm.
