
Why Your Bathroom Heater Keeps Dying (And How to Fix It)
Bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam in the air and intense, localized heat coming off the heater. It’s a brutal mix. I’ve seen way too many infrared heaters just give up the ghost because the lead-wire sealing wasn’t built for this. Here’s what happens: moisture hits a hot connection, the metal oxidizes, and things start to break down. Before you know it, you’ve got a dead short.
The problem with “standard” parts
Most generic heaters use basic PVC or low-grade silicone for the wire insulation. That stuff just can’t handle being inches away from a quartz tube running at full blast. The heat basically bakes the plastic until it’s brittle. Once those tiny cracks appear, steam crawls right into the core. We do things differently. We use high-grade fluorinated polymers and specialized heat-shrink sleeves. They stay strong even after being heated and cooled thousands of times. If that seal isn’t airtight, the copper turns green or black. And once it turns that color? It’s only a matter of time before it burns out.
It’s all about the bond
A good seal isn’t just about picking the right material. It’s about how it’s actually put together. We use a multi-stage approach. First, we do a mechanical crimp, then we add a high-temp potting compound. It creates a physical wall that water just can’t get through. Cheap assembly lines usually skip the potting part. They just use a sleeve and call it a day. But those sleeves slip. When they do, the bare wire is exposed to the steam. Our process locks the seal to the lamp base, so you don’t get that “creep” that leads to a short circuit.
One thing to watch out for
There is a trade-off here. Because these seals are so tight and heavy-duty, the wires are stiffer. You can’t just bend them into a tight corner. If you force a sharp angle, you risk cracking the seal, which kills the whole waterproof point. Just make sure your chassis layout gives the wires a bit of room to breathe. Give them some space, and they’ll last.
