Picking the Right Infrared Lamp for Your Bathroom
Getting the wattage right for your bathroom isn’t about fancy math—it’s just about making sure you actually feel warm without turning the room into a sauna or blowing a fuse.
Finding Your Power Match
If you’ve got a tiny bathroom (we’re talking under 5m²), a 400W to 600W shortwave lamp is usually plenty. These are great because they don’t waste time heating up the air; they just beam the heat straight to your skin. It’s an instant “ahhh” moment. For something a bit bigger, maybe between 5m² and 10m², you’ll probably want to jump up to 800W or 1000W. But here’s the thing: keep an eye on your ceilings. If you have those high, vaulted ceilings, the heat has a lot more room to wander off before it reaches you. In those cases, you might need a more powerful lamp or even a second unit to keep things cozy down where you actually are.
Don’t Go Overboard
It’s tempting to just buy the most powerful lamp available, but that’s actually a bad move. Putting a 1200W lamp in a tiny space is a waste of electricity. Plus, the thermostat will keep clicking on and off every few seconds. That constant flickering puts a lot of stress on the filaments, and your lamp will burn out way sooner than it should. The beauty of shortwave lamps is that they don’t care about humidity or that drafty vent fan in the ceiling. They just work.
A Quick Warning on Wiring
More power means more pull from your electrical panel. If you try to hook up a few 1000W units on one circuit, you’re asking for a tripped breaker. It’s worth double-checking your wiring before you start drilling holes. For most of us just updating an old bathroom, sticking with 600W units is the way to go. They fit into existing wiring much more easily, so you won’t have to call in an electrician to run a brand-new high-amp line.
